CSHE Colleague Marcelo Knobel Elected as New Rector of Unicamp

The Center for Studies in Higher Education congratulates our colleague Marcelo Knobel on his election as Rector of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) for a five year appointment. Founded 50 years ago, Unicamp has 34,000 students enrolled in 66 undergraduate courses, and is responsible for 8% of academic research in Brasil.

Marcelo is a Professor of Physics at Unicamp, a researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, Vice President of the Brazilian Society of Physics, and Editor-in-Chief of the Science and Culture Magazine for the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science. He served as Pró Reitor de Graduação at Unicamp from 2009 to 2013, where he was responsible for implementing the Interdisciplinary Higher Education Program. He remains dedicated to promoting the dissemination of science and technology in order to improve public perception of science in higher education.

Marcelo is also collaborating with CSHE Senior Researcher John Douglass, former CSHE Visiting Scholar Ana Maria Carneiro, SERU Project Liaison Renato Pedrosa, and CSHE Research Associate Igor Chirikov, in a proposal to fund a five year program in which four Brazilian universities in the state of São Paulo, including Unicamp and the University of São Paulo, will administer both the undergraduate SERU survey (ugSERU) and the new graduate student survey (gradSERU)
Marcelo has visited the Center numerous times, given talks, and wrote the following ROPS contribution:

Congratulations Marcelo!
