CSHE Launches UC ClioMetric History Project

April 24, 2017 - In preparation for the University of California’s 150th anniversary in 2018, and as  part of its on-going research on the history of UC, CSHE has launched the new University of California ClioMetric History Project (UC-CHP). Clio was the muse of history in Greek mythology,  and cliometric refers to the use of data and quantitative methods to explore history.

Directed by CSHE Research Associate, Zach Bleemer, and CSHE Principal Investigator, John Aubrey  Douglass, this project will take a Big Data approach to exploring the history and role of the UC  campuses in the state of  California. Data collection has already begun, and includes comprehensive  historical student and faculty records, course catalogs, and detailed budget allocations spanning the  20th and 21st centuries.

The UC ClioMetric History Project has four major areas of research that are being explored in collaboration with interested scholars and practitioners: Educational Access and Attainment; Socioeconomic Mobility; Economic and Technological Growth; and Gender and Race Equity.

The Project will pursue novel statistical analysis and distribute findings via blog posts, topic briefs, CSHE working papers, and reports, along with large-scale releases of previously-unavailable historical data. Initial funding has been provided by the Goldman School of Public Policy, the UC Office of the President, and CSHE.
